Usually, thankfully, my services aren’t required much over the course of a race weekend. That’s perfectly fine. Ask any paramedic, firefighter, police officer, nurse, or doctor, and they’ll all tell you they wish they were never needed. But so far this weekend, I’ve already seen an increase in injuries.

The Devil Racing team has been a part of the NRS paddock as long as I have, but it seems this year has seen a dramatic shift in attitude.

“These guys are getting reckless,” I say to Dorian.

“Yup,” he agrees as we work together to splint a rider’s arm.

“It makes me wonder what the first and premier classes will be like.” My stomach lurches when I mention the first class. Liam moved up there this year.

“Carnage, probably.”

I bite my lip and get our patient ready for transport to Cairns Base Hospital. Naturally I’m worried about Liam, even though I know he can handle himself. Besides, the thought of me worrying about him would probably cause more unwanted attention for him. No, the best thing I can do for Liam is hope for the best.

That’s all well and good until the first class race begins. From the get-go there’s a ton of argy-bargy.

“Better get ready,” Dorian comments as we watch the monitors.

I nod and pray Liam isn’t one of our patients.

A handful of riders go down during the race, luckily nothing too major. Dorian and I are able to handle them easily.

Then the race enters the final stages. Liam is fighting for the lead against Jason Heat, a Devil Racing rider. He’s going after Liam pretty aggressively. I keep hoping Liam will back off, settle for second, but I know that’s not in his nature.

We enter the final three laps of the race. The riders go through a fast left-hand, right-hand corner combination before coming to a slow hairpin turn. They get through it cleanly before accelerating down the back straight. Liam is leading, but Heat is catching up quick—but not quick enough to take the lead. He goes to tuck in behind Liam but doesn’t give him enough room, clipping Liam’s back wheel. I swear my stomach plummets and my heart stops. Every time I close my eyes, I’ll see the image of Liam being flipped off his bike, slamming into the asphalt and tumbling into the grass.

“Oh shit,” Dorian curses before starting to prep for Liam’s arrival.

I know I should be doing the same thing, but I can’t move, can’t take my eyes off Liam. He’s moving, but he hasn’t gotten to his feet yet.

I have no idea what happens in the race, in the centre around me, nothing. I keep my eyes on Liam, hoping against everything that he’s okay.

When he finally gets here, I snap back to attention.

“You good to do this?” Dorian asks me.

I nod. “I’m fine. I’m totally fine.”

“He a friend of yours?”

“Yeah, I guess you can say we are,” I say.

Dorian nods.

“But that’s all left at the door,” I reassure him.

They bring Liam in, and like I said, I leave everything at the door.
